Description: The Simcoe County Home Builders’ Association is holding its 11th Annual Ice Fishing Tournament on Kempenfelt Bay, Barrie, on February 18, 2017. DeafBlind Ontario Services as its charity of choice for this tournament, and we are looking for volunteers to assist with the tournament. There are a number of jobs and daytime shifts available. This is a great opportunity for high school students to get their community service hours!

Description: Program Description: Have you ever wanted to learn chess? Children and teens ages 8-16 years of age are invited to join local student Jake for a fun filled summer afternoon of chess and learning. Participants will learn the basic concepts of chess such as basic information on the chess pieces, how to get to checkmate, how to play a fun or competitive game, and how to solve chess puzzles. This program is also for children and teens who already know how to play chess and want to expand their knowledge of this extraordinary game. Volunteer Responsibilities: BPL is looking for volunteers to assist children and teens learn the rules of the game and help them participate. MUST KNOW HOW TO PLAY CHESS. Must be comfortable taking direction from Jake who is the student lead on this program.

This individual understands and demonstrates a commitment to our organization’s mission and programs. The position, Facilities, will be responsible for taking a lead role in project related tasks. The following is an overview of the role: Required to represent the organization in the community Required to ensure the minimum standards of service, approved by Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada, are attained by the organization Responsible for recommending qualified tradespersons when required Responsible for ensuring tradespersons have current WSIB clearance certificates and ensuring that they are complying with the Health and Safety Program while performing duties Informs the Executive Director if the maintenance work required to be performed is outside the scope of his/her qualifications Facilitates basic repairs on the building as required and requested by the Executive Director Facilitates basic landscaping duties as required Participates in monthly board meetings Participates in the Board evaluation process established by the Board We’re looking for someone who has the ability to conduct routine preventative maintenance in our office and has a good knowledge of basic repairs and landscaping. As well, the individual is dependable, trustworthy, has excellent interpersonal and communications skills (verbal and written), and has the ability to work collaboratively with other members of the board. Wish Granter

Description: Position Summary A wish granter will meet with the wish child and family members to help determine the child’s most heartfelt wish while brainstorming and planning special enhancements throughout the wish process. Wish granters work in teams of two alongside Make-A-Wish staff to ensure every eligible child’s wish comes true. Duties and Responsibilities Partner with at least one other volunteer wish granter to help grant the wishes of children throughout the chapter’s territory. Visit the wish child, with the goal of discerning his/her one true wish, while gaining a clear understanding of the reason behind the child’s most heartfelt wish. Complete and submit wish paperwork in a timely manner according to chapter guidelines. Create a magical wish experience for the wish child by planning and delivering “wish enhancements” – special, creative touches that keep the child excited about the wish throughout the process. Solicit in-kind donations, ensuring Make-A-Wish resources are used wisely. Plan “send-off” party or “presentation” party for each wish, as appropriate. Develop a positive rapport with the wish child and family by serving as a liaison between chapter staff and the wish family, ensuring the family is updated on the status of the wish throughout the wish process. Act as a reliable, communicative and productive member of the “wish team” by working closely with a volunteer partner and Make-A-Wish staff to create the best possible wish experience for the child. Other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate. Desired Qualifications Passion for children and high comfort level with interacting with children ages 3 to 17. Creative thinker with drive to make each wish unique and magical. Excellent people skills with the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, especially children with critical illnesses. Highly organized and detail-oriented. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Resourceful and self-motivated with a willingness to solicit in-kind donations. Flexible schedule and willingness to drive up to one hour to visit with wish child and family. Bilingual abilities in written and spoken form a plus. Location of Opportunity Meetings may take place at the wish family’s home or at a neutral location, such as a restaurant or hospital. Typically, wish meetings are scheduled for weekday evenings or weekends based upon the schedules of the wish team and wish family. Departure parties may be planned for the wish family’s home or a nearby venue/restaurant. Volunteer Commitment The average wish requires between 20-25 hours of volunteer work over a span of about six months to a year. Each wish can vary greatly in the time it takes to grant depending on the requested wish and wish family circumstances. Agree to work on a minimum of two wishes per year. Ensure all photos and communications from the wish family before, during and after the wish are passed along to the office. Complete official Make-A-Wish Wish Granter training. Attend continuing education courses, as offered by Make-A-Wish chapter staff. Provide and receive ongoing performance evaluation feedback from chapter staff. Puppy Foster Volunteer

Description: Purpose of the Position: Join the team to change the lives of people with disability and youth who are experiencing challenges by providing a loving home and obedience training to a Service Dog-in-training during its puppyhood. Responsibilities and Duties: Care for the dog’s need according to guidelines from COPE. Provide consistent structure, rules and boundary to the dog according to training from COPE. Provide obedience training and socialization to the dog. Transport the dog to and from its training programs: Canines in the Classroom (Innisfil) & Refinement Training (Barrie) Mon, Wed, Fri during regular school year (September - Jan 2020). Multiple pick up/drop off locations in Barrie and Innisfil by COPE van is available. Support from Volunteer Puppy Sitter network is available for vacation or emergency. Dog food, routine veterinary care, dog crate, walking harness and leash are provided by COPE. Qualifications: 18 years or older With own transportation Commitment Expected: Puppy available as soon as you have completed the Introductory Training Until August, 2020 Puppy Foster Training: Introductory Training will take place on July 27 & 28. Part 1 is on the Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Part 2 is on the Sunday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Training location: Woods Park Care Centre, 110 Lillian Crescent, Barrie, On Ongoing Puppy Foster Training: Wed from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. Weekly for 8 weeks, then bi-weekly ongoing. Training location: Barrie, On The application process takes time and training space is limited, please submit your application now to allow enough time to set up a home interview and ensure a training spot is reserved for you upon the approval of your application.
